Irish Census Substitutes:
How to use them and where to find them

Presented by Evva Housley

Due to the great record loss in Ireland, census substitutes (records not originally created for the purpose of a census but now used in lieu of a census) are a very important record source for Irish genealogy.

This program will cover Griffith’s Valuation and other valuation records, the Tithe Applotment, the 1796 Flax Growers Bounty/Spinning Wheel premium, and other 18th and 19th century substitutes, how to use them, and where to find them.

Evva Housley is an Accredited Genealogist professional in England and Ireland. Before she had her children, she worked for FamilySearch in Salt Lake City for eleven years in the then-British Reference unit. She loves her current job of full-time wife and mother.
