Researching Family Stories for 50 Years

Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of NVGS! As an all-volunteer organization, every member's contribution makes a big difference.

To ensure a successful future, we need members to serve in several key volunteer positions. Many tasks involve just a few hours per month and can be performed from home.

Look over the following list of our most critical needs, then email the contact person for each opportunity. For more information, download the complete list of all available positions.

Staff the Library (3 hours per month)

To serve our members and the public better, we need library volunteers! Recent member surveys indicate a strong desire for expanded library access, which is currently limited to a few hours per week.

Can you offer 3 hours one day per month of your time? Shifts are flexible, but typically run from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., or 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Weekends and evenings have been requested in particular, but we will work with your schedule to ensure greater library access for all.

Tackle a Special Library Project

Our library always has interesting projects in progress! Do you enjoy indexing, cataloging, digitizing, or other archiving tasks? We've got several projects that need work:

  • Pioneer files: Complete files by comparing contents to original application
  • Family files: Organize, evaluate, possibly digitize
  • Photos: Identify, digitize to cloud storage
  • Maps: Finish cataloging, labeling, inventorying contents
  • Archives: Digitize photos, inventory contents
  • Park Victory Hospital ledger: Index

These projects, once completed, will be valuable tools for researchers, so others will enjoy the fruits of your labor for years to come. Most projects will require a longer-term commitment, but schedules are also flexible.

Spread the Word About Our Programs

An essential part of successful programming is letting members and the public know about upcoming activities. We need one volunteer to create flyers and announcements for NVGS programs and events. With existing templates, the work can be done on your home computer in several hours per month.

Host a Round Table Conversation

Do you enjoy sharing and learning with others on interesting genealogical topics? Consider hosting a Round Table discussion group once or twice a year.

Groups meet by Zoom at 11:00 am on the first Monday of each month. Meetings last one hour. Hosting requires no special expertise. Zoom details are handled by other volunteers. As host, you simply spark a conversation among peers on a topic of interest to you. It’s fun!
